The fairy tales of Cinderella or Hansel and Gretel still touch the hearts of all people even today. But Germany also has the right conditions for these fairy tales. Read what they are.
Cinderella’s three hazelnuts: Moritzburg Castle
The castle could not be found in the right way: it is in the middle of a lake on a small island. This was also the decision reached by director Václav Vorlícek, who shot what is probably the most famous fairy tale film in the world at Moritzburg Castle in the 1970s: Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella. His version is one of the Germans’ favourites, and the baroque hunting lodge with four towers – built by August the Strong – was the original location for the film. So if you want to see in real life what the stairs where the wise Cinderella lost her shoe looks like, you should definitely visit the fairytale castle near Dresden. You can imagine the dance of Cinderella and her prince in your imagination.

Snow White: Kriebstein Castle
One of the classics, of course, is Snow White: The ingredients of this fictional crime thriller are well-known: the stepmother who is not afraid of murder, and the kind people who provide shelter for Snow White. And then the deadly apple. But the castle that the jealous stepmother looks at in the mirror is called Burg Kriebstein – at least it was the setting for a fairy tale movie. The time-honored walls are Saxony’s best warrior fortress and are impressive in that they are, after all, perched on steep cliffs. In 2018, the stories “Eisenhans” and “The Sweet Porridge” were also filmed here.

A wise farmer’s daughter: a Baroque garden in Großsedlitz
There is no story in which the protagonists do not have to solve the game in order to be happy in the end. It is no different from the wise farmer’s daughter. It takes time for him to warm the heart of the stubborn king. This story was also made into a film; Anyone who visits it will be rewarded with hours of magic, because with more than 60 sculptures, water features and 400 potted plants, it is one of the best-preserved baroque gardens in Germany. Against this fictional background, the story plays out wonderfully in your mind.

The Frog Prince: Rastatt Castle Beloved
“King’s daughter, little one, open to me” – what sounds like a fairy tale must at first have been pure fear for the beautiful king’s daughter: for the one who cries like that is a frog. And this frog wants to be close to the lady. Recently, on German television took the fairy tale “The Frog Prince”. The filming location was the picturesque Rastatt Castle in Baden-Württemberg near Baden-Baden. A baroque palace with a huge garden was the perfect setting for a white horse carriage ride. Because as the story of fairy tales goes: the frog becomes a prince. All’s well that ends well. With its furniture and high-quality collections, the castle is considered a work of art of the European standard.

Sleeping Beauty: Hartenfels Castle
The story of Sleeping Beauty has been performed several times, the first time in the summer of 1970. The exterior scenes were taken at Hartenfels Castle in Torgau, and no place could be more beautiful. The Saxon Renaissance masterpiece sits on the banks of the Elbe and appears as peaceful as it does in fairy tales: after that, everyone who lives there falls into a deep sleep for years one hundred. But then the prince comes and lifts the spell. If you want to see it live, the crime scene where Sleeping Beauty impales herself on the spindle, you should visit the castle and look at the cantilevered stairs. It leads to the 13th fairy room. Kissing is also allowed there.

Gold Medal: Trausnitz Castle and Burgk Castle
The story of the princess who couldn’t laugh is less well-known, but also very beautiful: it was filmed for the first time in 1953, and the medieval Trausnitz Castle in Landshut, Bavaria, was chosen for it to exist. It towers over the old town and is definitely worth seeing with its open galleries, arcades and frescoes. Although the story of the Gold Medal teaches you that pride does not make you happy. In 2013 the fairy tale will be filmed again, this time the event took place at Burgk Castle in Saale. Built in the Renaissance style, the simple building rises above the landscape and offers a view of the Saale River, hills and green fields. The perfect setting for a melancholic story that ends – how sweet – with a smile.
