Where knights, princes and kings once ate or laid their heads, blue-blooded people can now also live. Accommodation in castles and palaces varies from youth hostels to luxury hotels.
A secret passage to the castle kitchen
Wörlitz Castle in Saxony-Anhalt, together with the surrounding area Wörlitzer Park part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered to be the foundation of German classicism. During the guided tours, visitors can admire the well-preserved interior with furniture and ceramics, but also advanced features such as food elevators and sliding doors. An underground passage leads to the last point of the tour: This takes visitors to the old kitchen building of the castle. It served, among other things, as an inn, a castle kitchen and a laundry; today as a historical holiday. A special attraction is the 240-year-old fireplace that dominates the dining room and stretches from floor to ceiling.
You can eat like a prince at Anholt Castle – one of Münsterland’s largest castles. The large tower of the 12th century gives evidence of the first defense building, which was later converted into a palace of representatives. At the “Water Pavilion”, a restaurant in the middle of the castle’s pool, guests enjoy delicious food with a view of the castle and the park. The gastronomic offer is complemented by a rustic castle cellar, which allows direct access to the castle terrace in summer.

Historic settlements of the Rhine and Elbe
A total of 35 castles and palaces in Germany act as youth hostels and invite children and teenagers, families and groups to stay at a low price. One of them is the Ehrenbreitstein Castle in Koblenz: Perched above the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, it offers impressive views of the city. This is where the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley begins, which extends to Bingen and Rüdesheim: The beautiful river route with its countless castles on the hills can be experienced, for example, on tours of walking or boat trips.
A royal stay in Saxony begins with a trip on the Elbe: the steamers of the Saxon Steam Shipping Company are the best way to reach Pillnitz Castle. After leaving the old town of Dresden, the ship passes the old Elbe castles Albrechtsberg Castle, Lingner Castle and Eckberg Castle as well as the famous Loschwitz Bridge – the “Blue Wonder” before stopping at the old summer residence of the Saxon kings. In the large park of Pillnitz Castle, there are special holiday apartments available in small, comfortable buildings: the “Little Guardian’s House” and the “Trompeterhaus”.
