With or without a boat: Visit Germany’s freshwater islands and discover beautiful places close to the water.
In addition to the Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five museums in the middle of the Spree, there is a lot of water in and around Berlin. To this point: There are many lakes and rivers in Germany with even more islands. And how can you create that pure holiday feeling? On the water! Because water has an indescribable attraction, it motivates us to do many activities and relaxes us just by looking at it. This combination is perfect for an inspiring holiday even in the water!
City tour and island hopping
Did you think you could do a really relaxing island getaway on your city trip to Berlin? In addition to the Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five museums in the middle of the Spree, there is a lot of water in and around Berlin. For example, Tegler See in Reinickendorf covers an area of 450 hectares, making it the second largest lake in Berlin. There are nine islands there, and you can reach them by rowing, sailing or flying boat: Baumwerder, Hasselwerder, Lindwerder, Maienwerder, Reiswerder, Scharfenberg and Valentinswerder as well as Humboldt Island and Tegel Island with artificial islands they can “win”. There are also many harbors on the Greenwich road, where water enthusiasts can take a trip across the lake near Havel in the summer months.
Harriersand, Lower Saxony
Germany’s largest river island can be found between Bremen and Bremerhaven. Directly from the city of Brake is 11 kilometers long and about 500 meters wide Harriersand. It can be reached on foot or by bike from March to the end of October by ferry or you can use the pedestrian bridge in the small town of Rade. The Weser Island invites you to swim and walk along kilometers of natural beaches. Or you can watch the big and small ships heading for the North Sea. In addition to the bird sanctuary, a small mudflat in the north of the island can also be reached on foot. The restaurant, located directly on the sandy beach, serves all the beachgoers when they are hungry.
The Main Island and its wines
The river makes a big bend between the Franconian wine towns of Volkach and Schwarzach am Main and forms a beautiful wine island with the towns of Nordheim and Sommerach. Wine lovers are certainly familiar with Nordheimer Vogelein (mountain number one) and Sommeracher Katzenkopf (mountain number two) – or at least the delicious Silvaner that was allowed to grow and flourish there. Hiking, cycling tours, wine tasting, river cruises or culinary delights are possible on the Great Franconia Island. All you have to do is decide the order of these tasks!
The beautiful unknown Rhine
With 68 hectares, it is larger than the island of Mainau in Lake Constance, but only a few people know it: Marianneaue on the Rhine. Located between Eltville and Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau, it is 3.3 kilometers long and measures around 300 meters at its widest point. Mariannenaue was formed more than 10,000 years ago from alluvial limestone that the Rhine brought from the Alps. Land suitable for viticulture: Today Mariannenaue belongs to Reinhartshausen Castle and wine is grown there. Deer and wild boar from the mainland swim across the Rhine to reach the sweet grapes. We humans do not need to be so brave and we can enjoy the Mariannenaue water gifts at Erbacher Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen. Unfortunately you can’t visit Mariannenaue – but the view of the island from the vineyards is beautiful too!
Eight letters and good holiday ideas
Many puzzles ask about the Swabian Sea with eight letters. The solution is Lake Constance and not only that: The lake in the territory of the four countries of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein is one of the main tourist attractions in Germany. At Lake Constance you can have great moments of enjoyment in one place, or rather, in many places. Water and mountains, sport and culture, city and country. And: the islands! Reichenau is the largest island in Lake Constance and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000 along with the Reichenau Monastery. Reichenau is like a large vegetable garden, lush and fertile. In comparison, the “younger sister”, the island of Mainau, is an island of meditation, idleness and many flowers and trees. You don’t have to choose between the two island sisters: it’s better to experience and enjoy both!
Famous for artists: Fraueninsel in Lake Chiemsee
One of the three islands in the middle of Chiemsee is the 12-hectare Fraueninsel. The island’s village consists of small streets with beautiful houses decorated with flowers and gardens of about 250 islanders as well as traditional businesses such as pottery and fishing. The oldest monastery in Germany, the Benedictine monastery Frauenwörth, from which the name of the island is derived, is also worth a visit. The unique environment around the island attracted artists and writers even before the first vacationers. There they found an undisturbed retreat with views of the mountains and surrounding area. Today, boats always dock at the island’s harbor and bring day or night visitors comfortably to the island.
